“Healing Hearts” by Debbie Wolfe

Thank you SSQ members for the generous fabric donations and cash for my “Healing Hearts” project. I am greatly humbled by the overwhelming support from the Board and members.
The monies donated will be used buy more supplies as needed. Jewell Buck has offered to donate the batting; Heather Stadelman with Bernina has donated the backing, some thread and glue. Paper Pieces in Paducah, Kentucky has donated a large package of papers and glue.
Since February 14th I have been busy cutting, gluing, and sewing up these little hearts for the quilt, each requiring two, ½” jewels to make a heart measuring 1 ¾” x 1 ¼”. Updates on my progress will be shared at the SSQ General Meetings.
It takes only one fabric scrap of 2” x 3 ½” to make one heart. I welcome your quality scraps in ANY color, this size or larger, with the focus on more reds and pinks in early fall.
The history of the “Healing Hearts” project:
“Healing Hearts” Project was started by me, Debbie Wolfe, on February 14, 2021 out of the need to heal my heart from all the sorrow caused by the Covid-19 Pandemic that started in December 2019 and continues into 2021. There have been over 500k deaths in the US; 6k in Colorado. For me, hand stitching is relaxing and heals my soul. I wanted to make a quilt to honor those lost in the Pandemic. When I shared my idea for this project with Cindy Williams, the name “Healing Hearts” was born. This quilt is in memory of all those that have died from Covid-19.
My goal is to hand stitch approximately 4,000 to 5,000 hearts, each 1 ¾” x 1 ¼, in many colors to make a queen size quilt using the English Paper Piecing method AND to have it completed by February 14, 2022: ONE YEAR after inception. The “Healing Hearts” quilt will be donated to a local organization or the Quilt Museum after being displayed for several months in various locations.
